Chambray: Karabela
The Karabela, a traditional Haitian fabric, is made of chambray fabric, a cotton fabric produced in Cambrai in the 16th century in northern France. It is woven using indigo and white threads, giving it a faded denim appearance.
Chambray was adopted by Haitian peasants around the 1940s making everyday clothing for the working class. Over the years, it was gradually replaced by foreign garments. However, as a part of the heritage, chambray has been preserved to make traditional costumes and folk dances.
Made in Haiti
Our karabela products are made in Haiti by Haitians. Our goal is to showcase their work and support the Haitian economy. At the same time, we also want to break the cycles of poverty through job creation. Therefore, our clothing is not produced in manufacturing factories where children and adults are often exploited. We do not have employees but rather business partners.
