Catherine Flon, Ruffled top
Catherine Flon is known to have sewn the two pieces of fabric of the flag of Haiti on May 18, 1803. There are two versions as to the creation of the flag. The 1st version tells that on May 18, 1803 at the Arcahaie congress, Dessalines tore the white part of the French tricolor flag and Catherine Flon who participated in the congress picked up the remaining pieces of fabric, either blue and red, in order to sew them using , according to legend, her hair as yarn. The 2nd version has it that one of Dessalines' daughters was mistreated by a colonist and seeing his daughter bleeding, he tore off her blue skirt, took her red scarf and asked Catherine Flon to bring them together, exclaiming: "never , never again will a Frenchman hit our girls. Freedom or death”. This would explain why the blue of the flag of Haiti is not identical to the blue of the French flag.
